Testing Pool Chemicals

Updated: May 17

Every pool owner needs to know how to test the chemicals in their pool or hot tub. Read this quick blog to learn the basics.

Testing Cl or Chlorine

Chlorine is the chemical that will keep your pool blue. If the water is getting a green tent, or you see algae growing on the surface of your pool it is because the Cl is too low in your pools water. Most test kits require 5 full drops from the bottle with a yellow lid. Just add your drops and then shake the tester until the color is even. Then compare the color of your test to the indicators on the tester. Cl should be between 3 and 4 ppm.

Testing pH or Hydrogen Ion Concentration

pH is the chemical that keeps your pool clear and prevents a burning sensation in your eyes. Most test kits require 5 full drops from the bottle with a red lid. Just add your drops and then shake the tester until the color is even. Then compare the color of your test to the indicators on the tester. pH should be between 7.2 and 7.6 ppm.
